Romans 11:34 – Man put in his place
29-10-2021 - Posted by HansFor who knew the mind of the Lord? Or, who became His adviser?
The words Paul records here clearly refer to Isaiah 40:13. Both Isaiah and Paul ask these rhetorical questions, to underline the absolute freedom and sovereignty of GOD. What child of man has the faintest idea of the contents of the oceans or the size of the heavens (Isaiah 40:12)? The questions about the how and what of creation always become more and more as the research progresses. As knowledge grows, so does the mystery.
It is against this background that the question arises, “Who knew the mind of the Lord?” If the intelligent design of every single creation is so far beyond anyone’s comprehension, how great must the Creator himself be? How could we understand even a fraction of his immense mind?
Once aware of the utter futility of the human mind and cognition, the next question becomes almost comical: “Who became his advisor?” If we understand next to nothing about creation, who would dare set himself up as the Lord’s counselor? As if we would know better than Him! That’s not just haughty, it’s downright ridiculous!
