Last Sunday we experienced the premiere of a Sunday GoedBericht study day in Zoetermeer. And it was a success! With more than eighty people we gathered to deepen our understanding of what Paul teaches in the letter to the Romans about “the righteousness of God.” Between the two sessions ample time was reserved for lunch and fellowship. From many responses we gather that repetition would be greatly appreciated, and therefore we are considering organizing such a meeting day more often in the future.
That same day, both studies were placed on the GoedBericht site in MP3 and PowerPoint format, so that you can calmly listen to and view them again. Later this week the video recordings will also follow. (See below)
God’s righteousness …
- … means: God does justice. Not by demanding, but by fulfilling His promise (Rom. 3:21);
- … is realized, not on the basis of our faith IN Jesus Christ, but on the basis of the faith OF Jesus Christ. That is what we should believe (Rom. 3:22);
- … is made manifest, not by condemning humanity, but by justifying it freely (Rom. 3:23, 24, 26);
- … does not stand merely over against the unrighteousness of humanity, but also and especially over against humanity’s own righteousness. One’s own works (Judaism) or one’s own faith (Christianity) as a ground for justification demonstrates unfamiliarity with God’s righteousness (Rom. 10:3).
In these four points, both studies of Sunday are (in my view) well summarized.
