Joshua 24:15 – A call to choose?

23-09-2020 - Posted by Andre Piet

Yet if it is displeasing in your eyes to serve YAHWEH, choose for yourselves today whom you shall serve, whether those Elohim that your fathers had served when they dwelt across the stream or whether the Elohim of the Amorite in whose land you are dwelling…

At the end of his life, Joshua looks back on Israel’s history and how GOD once chose Patriarch Abraham and made him His promises. He had sent his progeny to Egypt and eventually led them out mightily through Moses and finally led them into the promised land under Joshua’s direction. GOD had chosen Israel.

The words “choose for yourselves today whom you shall serve” are usually quoted to urge people to choose GOD. But that has been completely taken out of context. The idea is exactly the other way around! GOD had long made his choice for Israel and had proven it. And that would be more than enough for them to live from. And if the people weren’t pleased to choose that way, then they had to choose for themselves. That’s what Joshua tells the people.

Whoever believes does not have the stress of choice in the world. Because you simply rely on Him who has already chosen for you!
