Galatians 6:14 – The cross of our Lord

Now may it not be mine to be boasting, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world

“The cross of our Lord” symbolizes what “the world” has done to Jesus Christ. Not in the least, yes, it was precisely the religious world that did this. Nota bene, in the crème de la crème of religion, Jerusalem, the Messiah was rejected and killed. This outlines the total bankruptcy of human achievement. But how can this fact be a reason of boasting for Paul? The only reason actually. The answer is simple.

Where man ends, there God begins. Our ceiling is His floor. The cross says what the (religious) person is capable of. What happened three days later tells us what God is capable of. Man kills, but God vivifies! Mankind demonstrated hatred but God demonstrates transcendent love. The same humanity that killed His Son, He is going to give Life.

“The cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” teaches us: nothing of man, everything of God. The cross is that “one act” that guarantees that all mankind is justified (Rom. 5:18), quickened, saved and reconciled! Unconditional and universal!
