Galatians 6:14 – crucified to the world

02-11-2022 - Posted by Hans

Now may it not be mine to be boasting, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world

For Paul, the cross marks the gap between him and the world and vice versa. The cross symbolizes the hatred of the world towards our Lord Jesus Christ and all who belong to Him. So that Paul can say: I too have been crucified to the world. And vice versa, for that matter: the world has been crucified to me. I no longer have anything to do with this religious system (Gr. kosmos).

Notice that the name of “our Lord Jesus Christ” is spelled out here. It refers not only to the cross but to Him who was subsequently raised from the dead by God. God has made Jesus Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36). The cross may be the emblem of Jesus’ death to the world, but for us who know the sequel, He is “our Lord Jesus Christ”, the raised from the dead!

The cross is the emblem of a vile death to the world. But we know better. The cross demonstrates God’s unconditional love, which after all brings Life to light through that way. For all, yes!
