Galatians 3:22 – Locked up

05-08-2022 - Posted by Hans

But the scripture locks up all together under sin, that the promise out of Jesus Christ’s faith  may be given to those who are believing.

The law contrasts with the promise, but it does not compete with it. For precisely because the law is incapable of producing life and righteousness, it compels man to turn to the promise of God. The Scriptures lock up all under sin, as a judge locks up in prison. The word for ‘lock up’ (Gr. sugkleio) is first encountered in Luke 5:6, which refers to a multitude of fish trapped in nets. No escape. Also in Romans 11:32 we find this same verb: “For God locks up all together in stubbornness, that He should be merciful to all.”

The reason all people are locked up under sin is “that the promise the promise out of Jesus Christ’s faith may be given…”. Note that as in Gal.2:16 and 20, this also refers to the “faith of Jesus Christ”. He is “the seed” to whom the promise to Abraham pertained (Gal. 3:16) and through whom all the families on the face of the earth will be blessed. His faith guarantees this outcome! Nothing to add to or subtract from. Just believe that!
