Galatians 3:14 – Blessing for the nations and Israel.

Christ reclaims us from the curse of the law (…) that the blessing of Abraham may be coming to the nations in Christ Jesus, (and) that we may be obtaining the promise of the spirit through faith.

Christ redeemed us (=Israel) from the curse of the law for two purposes (2x “that” in verse 14) . First, that the blessing of Abraham might come to the nations. After all, in Abraham’s seed (= Christ Jesus) all families of the earth would be blessed.

The second “that” is about Israel. The “we” in verse 14, like the “us” in verse 13, refers to the people who were under the law and were to be ransomed (4:5). It is also to Israel to whom “the promise of the Spirit” was given. Receiving the Spirit is part of the new covenant, “not of the letter, but of the Spirit” (2 Cor.3:6). Or, as Isaiah (59:21) prophesied, “This is my covenant with them, says Yahweh. My Spirit which is on you…”.

It is “in Christ Jesus” that the blessing of Abraham comes to the nations. But not only that. The people of Israel also receive the promised Spirit through Him. How? Not by works, but “through faith” (Rom.3:30). By faith alone!
