Galatians 3:13 – hung on a pole.

Christ reclaims us from the curse of the law, becoming a curse for our sakes, for it is written, Accursed is everyone hanging on a pole…

Through the promised Christ Israel would be freed from the yoke (=the curse) of the old covenant (Jer.31:31-33). The “us” in this verse therefore refers to those who are “under the law” (Gal.4:5). The death of Christ marks the end of the old (marriage) covenant. Christ represents the Man (=God) who was married to Israel and of whom Paul writes in Romans 7:2: “For a woman in wedlock is bound to a living man by law. Yet if the man should be dying, she is exempt from the law of the man.”

While Christ died and ended the old covenant, He hung on a tree, literally bearing the curse of the law. In Deut.21:22,23 it is said that a man condemned to death should be killed and displayed as a cursed on a stake. The condemned was not cursed because he hung on the wood, but vice versa: he hung on the wood because he was cursed. Christ was hung as accursed on the tree and just so He redeemed His people!
