Galatians 2:21 – Black and white

30-06-2022 - Posted by Hans

I am not repudiating the grace of God, for if righteousness is through law, consequently Christ died gratuitously.

This verse concludes Paul’s historical record and his explanation to Peter. From the next verse (3:1) he immediately addresses the Galatians. The conclusion is crystal clear, no matter what others may claim (or imply by hypocrisy; 2:13). “The grace of God” cannot be tampered with because “the truth of the Gospel” (2:5) is black and white. Nuances or shades of gray are excluded.

It is either grace of God or righteousness by law (whatever law; no article present). As Paul pointed this out in Romans 11:6: “Now if it is grace, it is no longer out of works else the grace is coming to be no longer grace.” Grace means ‘gratuitous’. There is no such thing as a little bit for free. If man should or could contribute anything in this matter himself, then it is no longer grace. Period.

Once upon a time, by one misstep of one man, all men were condemned. Without exception. Against this one lapse is “one just award” by one man. That is what Paul just called “the faith of Christ” or “of the Son of God.” Christ died. That is all decisive. There is nothing to contribute or take away from it. Amen!
