Galatians 2:20 – Living in the faith of the Son of God

30-06-2022 - Posted by Hans

With Christ have I been crucified, yet I am living; no longer I but living in me is Christ. Now htat which I am now living in flesh, I am living in faith that is of the Son of God, who loves me and gives Himself up for me.

Paul describes here a totally renewed identity. Similar to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The caterpillar is no longer there and yet it is again… because as a butterfly it continues to exist. That is what Paul later (in 6:15) calls the “new creation” in Christ, in which “neither circumcision nor uncircumcision” mean anything.

“…I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me”. The old ‘I’ no longer counts, because God does not count with it. It is over, because it was crucified with Christ. The ‘old me’ had a past, the ‘new me’ a future! And what one!

And insofar as we still live here “in the flesh”, the only thing that counts in it is the faith “of the Son of God, who loves me and gave himself up for me”. Again, as in 2:16, it is about the faith of the Son of God. Not my faith, but his (perfect) faith and his love and him giving himself up for me, that makes me live!
