Ephesians 4:25 – Truth versus lie

26-07-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

Wherefore, putting off the false, let each be speaking the truth with his associate, for we are members of one another.

As you cannot wear two coats at the same time, you cannot put on the old and the new humanity at the same time. It is one or the other. Every time Paul says we would do something, he also adds the alternative. Whoever speaks the truth with his neighbor automatically lays of the lie. Paul’s incentives are positive. You do not have to put energy into not doing something, you focus on doing something. In Dutch, the word ‘negative’ comes from the verb ‘ignore’, that is to say, not paying attention to something. To successfully ignore something is only possible when you have an alternative.

The alternative the lie, is of course, the truth. Lies may often have benefits in the short term, but ultimately the fruit is always sour. For they come to light. Lies pass by, but the truth is permanent. The lie therefore belongs to the old humanity which is corruptible. Truth on the other hand, belongs to the new humanity which is incorruptible. That is where we meet each other and experience the unity. Permanently!
