in accord with His riches…

Now my God shall be filling your every need in accord with His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19

The above verse perfectly demonstrates why this letter of Paul, written from prison, overflows with joy. Paul knew a GOD who provides for every need! That is, He gives everything that is necessary to be STRONG in the midst of all circumstances (4:11). And He does not give sparingly but “according to His riches.” Literally it says “according to the riches of Him.” Plural, therefore. Also note the preposition. Not “out of His riches” but “according to His riches.” What is the difference?

An illustration. Bill Gates’ wealth is currently estimated at about 40 billion dollars. Suppose he gives a tip to a beggar on the street. Then he gives out of his riches. But if that same Bill Gates were to give to this beggar IN ACCORD with his riches, then that beggar would instantly be extremely rich!

Well then, the GOD of heaven and earth, of gold, diamonds and all mineral resources—that GOD provides for us who believe according to His riches. Not (necessarily) by giving us earthly gold or silver. That does not truly make a person rich, nor happy. There are more than enough examples of that. True riches are within. The awareness of having enough. Being conscious of the radiant future that awaits. Gold as a precious metal is a picture of “the expectation of the glory of God in which we are glorying” (Rom.5:2). Incorruptible! Just as silver speaks of “the corresponding ransom for ALL” which Christ Jesus paid on Golgotha (1Tim.2:6). So that thereby the redemption of all mankind would be guaranteed (1Tim.2:4; 4:10)!

What a privilege to be under the care of this rich GOD!
