1 Corinthians 4:18-20 – word or power?

Now some were puffed up as though I were not coming to you. Yet I shall be coming to you swiftly, if ever the Lord should be willing, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power.

Under the delusion that Paul would not return to Corinth, some took the occasion to combat Paul’s preaching. They objected to his aversion to beautiful rhetoric and worldly wisdom. For it was just their ambition to have prestige in the world.

Paul didn’t know exactly when, but he knew that he soon would visit Corinth. And a confrontation with the word of these puffed up people would be unavoidable. He was not afraid of that. He was not impressed at all of their big words. For it was nothing more than a soap bubble waiting to burst.

In the Kingdom of God it’s not just about the ‘word’. Surely, there are  so many empty words, with so many pretentions and promises. What counts is word with power. That proves itself as true. GOD’s word!
