Galatians 2:5 – Unyielding

To whom not even for an hour do we simulate by subjection, that the truth of the evangel should be continuing with you.

The false brethren Paul is talking about here are those who were ‘smuggled’ into Antioch to spy on “our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus.” They had been sent out to see if the believers from the nations were being ‘Jewish’ (Judaized). But such espionage enslaved not only the believers of the nations but also the Jewish believers.

Paul and Barnabas strongly opposed this from the start, as we read in Acts 15:2. Convinced that “the truth of the Evangel” was being attacked, they were willing to fight for it as far as Jerusalem. “Not even for an hour,” or as we would say, not a moment, have they meekly lined up for these brethren. And not pretended either.

What determination and love for “the truth of the Gospel” expresses Paul’s attitude! He didn’t reason: well, let’s avoid confrontation and thereby keep the peace. This may be called ‘tolerant’ nowadays, but in reality it is indifference. Where the truth is demonstrably at stake, Paul did not budge! Not a millimeter!
