Romans 4:13 – Not through law
04-12-2020 - Posted by Andre PietFor not through law is the promise to Abraham, or to his Seed, for him to be enjoyer of the allotment of the world, but through faith’s righteousness.
Abraham is a father (also in the sense of prototype) of all believers, regardless of their descent. It has nothing to do with the law. In the Galatians letter (3:17), Paul argues that the giving of the law on Sinai took place four hundred and thirty years after the promise to Abraham. Abraham knew the promise of GOD and lived by it. That is what faith is: trusting that GOD will keep His promise.
In the giving of the law on Sinai, the tables were turned and the people promised, “All that YAHWEH has spoken we will do” (Ex. 19: 8). But that was mission impossible. The people failed from the beginning. Even before the stone tablets reached the people, they were already broken (literally and figuratively)! It demonstrates the fundamental principle that justice is never obtained on the basis of law abidance.
GOD had promised that Abraham or his seed would be “the enjoyer of the allotment of the world”. After all, through the seed of Abraham, all the families of the earth would be blessed. The whole world would be theirs. Not because of achievements but because GOD has promised this!
