It is a unique vista that Paul shares here. Beyond the rule of Christ. An idea that is completely incomprehensible to the majority of Christians. For one reads in Bible translations that Christ will reign “for all eternities” (Rev. 11:15, for example). How then can Paul write here that Christ must rule “until“? The answer to this question is crucial to understanding the Gospel!
‘Eternity’ is an invention of theologians; the term unknown in Scripture. The Greek word for which it is translated in ‘the New Testament’ is ‘aion.’ However, ‘Aion’ does not mean ‘eternity’ but an era. Eons have both a beginning and an end in Scripture. Thus the Scriptures speak of “before the eons,” “the end of the eon,” “eonian times,” “the end of the eons,” and so forth. The translation word ‘eternity’ is out of place because eternity has no beginning or end.
The bottom line is: Christ does not rule “forever” but “into the eons,” those are the world eras that will follow. That takes a long time, but it is not without end. Hence “until” …
