Romans 8:14,15 –Sons of God

For whoever are being led by God’s spirit, these are sons of God. For you did not get slavery’s spirit to fear again, but you got the spirit of sonship, in which we are crying, Abba, Father!

Those who believe the Evangel are sealed with God’s spirit (Eph. 1:13). Only when one has received that spirit can one also be led by it. This guidance is evident in the disposition that corresponds to that spirit, namely, “life and peace” (8: 6). This disposition is characteristic of “sons of God”.

We encounter the concept of “sonship” more often in Paul’s epistles. The idea is: children are born, but sons are placed. Sonship takes place when the child is counted adult and is set over the things of his father (Gal. 4: 1-5). In Romans 8:23 Paul writes that our sonship will take place at “the deliverance of our body”. That is future. Then we will be revealed as sons of God to deliver all creation (8:19). The sons of God play a key role in the liberation of creation. They share that position with the Son, who is “the firstborn among many brethren” (8:29).

The sonship itself waits for “the deliverance of our body”. But the “spirit of sonship” is already ours.
