Romans 7:21-23 – Going down fighting
13-04-2021 - Posted by HansConsequently, I am finding the law that, at my willing to be doing the ideal, the evil is lying beside me. For I am gratified with the law of God as to the man within, yet I am observing a different law in my members, warring with the law of my mind, and leading me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
These verses describe the struggle of someone “under the law”. With the mindset that man must fulfill the commandments. The ideals are beautiful (“I delight in the law of God”) but the performance is a drama. Paul describes this conflict between “the inner man” and “my members” as a war in which the “I” loses and is taken captive.
The law “of the sin that is in my members” beats “the law of my mind” that delights in the law of God. It’s a conclusion that’s both honest and sad. It means that piety and good intentions are unable to get people where they want to go. This means the bankruptcy of religion and own works.
But… where man ends, there GOD begins!
