Romans 6:14 – Not under law but under grace

16-02-2021 - Posted by Andre Piet

For Sin shall not be lording it over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Few Bible readers realize the downright revolutionary nature of what Paul teaches here. This statement is the (provisional) end and climax of his argument. It answers the question of how and why sin will not control us. The current religious view is that sin will not rule us if we put ourselves under the law.

Paul says the exact opposite. It is precisely when we are under the law that sin will rule us. The law makes us fight against sin. But the more we are busy not committing sin, the more sin dominates us. Because the law determines us what we are not allowed to do and that is precisely what stimulates sin. Law makes sin attractive.

GRACE is the Divine answer to this great problem! Grace demands nothing, but gives everything. Grace does not determine me by my incapacity, but by GOD’S ability. Not what I can’t do, but what He can do! Grace teaches me to count that I am no longer a sinner but righteous in Christ. Grace makes me walk happily before GOD, in newness of life!
