Romans 16:20 – Crushing Satan under your feet

Now the God of peace will be crushing Satan under your feet swiftly. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you!

In the preceding verses, those who cause “dissensions and snares” (:17) were exposed. They are instruments of the Adversary who is after all bent on tricking believers away from their position in Christ (Eph.6:11). This results in dissatisfaction and alienation from each other (disagreements).

Paul was glad, however, that the Adversary had no success with his readers in Rome. The God of peace who is with them all (15:33!), guarantees that Satan in due course. will be crushed swiftly under their feet. The idea is not so much that this would happen soon, but that when it does, it will happen “in speed”. In Genesis 3:15 the Christ (“the seed of the woman”) is foretold to crush the serpent’s head. Here this is applied to the believers (“under your feet”). Logically, they are part of Christ’s body!

As in all Paul’s letters (2Thes.17,18) he also concludes here with the words “the grace of our Lord Jesus is with you”. That is not a wish but a guarantee!
