Romans 15:6– With one mouth

07-03-2022 - Posted by Hans

…that, with one accord, with one mouth, you may be glorifying the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As believers, we may (as Christ once did) be taught by the scriptures and encouraged by the hope they hold. In this way we learn to ignore ourselves. When we are all oriented to what “is written”, then automatically ‘the noses are in one direction’. Unity does not mean uniformity, nor does it mean that we imitate each other. It also means no shared membership in the same club. That is just an artificial (imposed) unity as organizations strive for.

An organic unit, on the other hand, is not created, but it is there. We experience that unity when we share a common love for the scriptures and repeat the words they contain. That is also what we portray in singing: saying the same words together. As in a choir “with one mouth” and thus “with one accord”.

This concord is a harmony. Because no matter how many kinds of voices there are, it is symphonic. Led by Him who is leading (Ps.22:22) we speak as “with one mouth” the words of God that sound like music in our hearts. This is how we display the glory of the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
