Romans 12:3 – To each a measure

30-11-2021 - Posted by Hans

For I am saying, through the grace which is given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to be overweening, beyond what your disposition must be, but to be of a sane deposition, as God parts to each the measure of faith.

This verse is a further explanation of the previous one, as can be seen from the word “for”. Experiencing the good, well pleasing and perfect will of God (:2), means that everyone should submit to what God allots. Precisely because Paul himself had learned that the grace that was given him exactly satisfies his needs, he had the right to present this truth to others as well. “Sufficient for you is My grace” (2 Cor.12:9).

God allocates a certain “measure of faith” to each person: just right for him or her to whom it is given. That’s why it’s so important not to want to be more than you are. In Greek it can be seen how Paul plays with the word for ‘disposition’ (Gr. phroneo). ‘Disposition’ has to do with the direction in which one thinks. The ‘mindset’ would be aimed at ‘sane’. Make maximum use of what God gives but also do not want more than that. That is the secret of contentment.
