Romans 1:16 – To everyone who is believing

For not ashamed am I of the evangel, for it is God’s power for salvation, to everyone who is believing, to the Jew first and to the Greek as well.

Paul heralds the Gospel so boldly and unashamedly as it does not shame him. It is a message that he can present because it is exactly what it claims to be. It is a message, a statement, a fact that is true whether the recipient believes it or not. Moreover, it is an undeniably good message, regardless of whether it is believed or not. Because it says: GOD saves! Unconditional and ‘for free’. That is how the Evangel sounds “God’s power for salvation”. After all, it is the Evangel of GOD’s Son (: 9) whose Name is JESUS, which means: YAHWEH saves!

The first fact is that GOD saves everyone. The second fact is how GOD saves today, namely “everyone who is believing“. This theme will be discussed in detail later. Believing means: sincerely trusting that GOD lives up to his word. Believing is not an achievement. Because then it would be working (4: 5). Faith is precisely the recognition that a person can do nothing and does not have to do anything!
