Romans 10:14,15 – how beautiful are the feet…

How, then, should they be invoking One in Whom they do not believe? Yet how should they be believing One of Whom they do not hear? Yet how should they be hearing apart from one heralding? Yet how should they be heralding if ever they should not be commissioned? According as it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those bringing an evangel of good!

Paul describes a very logical sequence. Calling on the Lord as Savior (1) is only done if one also believes in him (2). But to believe in Him one must first hear from Him (3). And to hear from Him there must be someone who also makes Him known or heralds Him (4). But to herald one will have to be commissioned (5).

Paul underlines his statement about ‘heralding’, with a beautiful quote from Isaiah 52:7. In that verse it talks about the glad tidings of redemption sent to Israel among the nations (!) about the Lord who will return to her to become King. She hears the good news abroad because a herald has been sent to her. Do we not recognize Paul in this? Herald, apostle and teacher of the nations (1Tim.2:7). His feet took him to the ends of the earth. To evangelize good things. How beautiful is that!
