John 8:32 – The truth will be making you free

“If ever you should be remaining in My word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the truth and the truth will be making you free.”

The slogan hung over various entrance gates of concentration camps during the Second World War: arbeit macht frei. It was a sinister distortion of what the Bible teaches. Because not labor but truth makes free. That is a difference between death and life.

By the way, pay attention to the order of the process described here. It starts with “staying in my word”. Insist on what the scriptures teach and do not depart from them. Not leaning on human word and tradition but on what is “written”.

The next phase is that we learn or understand the truth through this route. Because Scripture is its own interpreter. The words that are written in it will get meaning and come to life. Literally even, because everything in it refers to the one who was raised from the dead. That is the truth and LIFE! That frees us up. Freedom is not the result of our own efforts. They only disappoint. It is GOD who makes us understand his word and thereby opens closed doors and windows!
