Sensible atheists?

Last Wednesday evening, the monthly Bible evening took place in Rijnsburg. There I explained what it means that God is GOD. Soon you can expect a summary of this evening on this site, as well as the recordings of the speeches.

After the study, an interesting discussion arose about the question whether it is indeed true that sensible people by definition assume the existence of God. That is what I had put forward. But can that position be maintained, was the question? Are there not plenty of people who sincerely believe that there is no God? Indeed, such people undoubtedly exist. But how is it that they think this way? Is it because they looked at creation with an open mind and then, through logical reasoning, came to the conclusion that all the ingenious and intelligent systems observed in nature must have come into being by themselves? Think again!

The first spontaneous reaction of any sensible person is one of amazement at so much intelligence! All of creation – from the microcosm of atoms and molecules to the macrocosm of stars and galaxies – testifies to an incredibly intelligent design.

Suppose a sculpture of Michelangelo-like beauty washes up on a beach. Would even a single sensible person assume, by default, that it was accidentally formed by erosion in the ocean? Of course, it could be. But that would be a forced explanation. And that concerns nothing more than a washed-up piece of stone!

The theory of evolution is, in mega-multiplied form, the academic variant of such a forced explanation. It is absurd to suppose that through a cosmic big bang so many billions of years ago, the fabulously complex creation spontaneously came into being. But give an evolutionist time, and chance will do the rest. That it is a forced explanation does not matter, because the alternative – that God exists – is simply unbearable for many of them. So they opt for a completely improbable theory.

In the meantime, however, this theory has acquired an untouchable status and the entire society has been indoctrinated with it. Thus, the truth and the deepest awareness in every human being is effectively suppressed. Exactly as Paul already wrote in Romans 1.
