Galatians 4:7 – From slave to son and thus heir.

So that you are no longer a slave, but a son. Now If a son an enjoyer also of an allotment from God through Christ.

In practice , Israel’s position “under the law” was not substantially different from that of a slave (4:1). It is true that as a people they were destined for ‘sonification’, but until the coming of Christ they were strictly guarded “under the pedagogue” (3:25), that is, “the law”. With the death and resurrection of Christ, everything changed. This ended “the old covenant” (Rom.7:2) and at the same time inaugurated the new covenant (Rom.7:4; Heb.13:20).

It is by receiving “the spirit of his Son” that we are put in the position of son. No longer “under the law”, but in freedom. Not only receiving love from the Father as a child , but also as a son addressing God as Father (4:6): maturely discussing with Him everything that has to do with the “allotment” (read: inheritance) that He gives us.

Sonship is synonymous with heirship in the Bible. Strictly speaking, a ‘son’ need not even be a physical offspring. If a person qualifies to receive the ‘allotment’, then he is a ‘son’ (see 1Sam.24:17; 2Ki.2:12). Being made sons defines us in the high position to which we are called!
