Galatians 3:28 – All one in Christ Jesus

In Whom ther is no Jew nor yet Greek, there is no slave nor yet free, there is no male and female, for you all are one in Christ Jesus.

In the immersion (baptism) “in Christ Jesus” religious or racial differences between Jew and Greek play no role. Also major social differences between slave and free are completely irrelevant. Nor is the difference between male and female. However much such distinctions may leave deep marks in the old creation. It is certainly not the case that these differences do not exist for believers. Imagine: without the difference between masculine and feminine, the meaning of marriage would disappear in an instant (even if people try to tell us other things today).

What Paul does not teach in this verse is that all believers would be equal, as many are reading this superficially today. How many instructions in Paul’s letters are precisely about the differences between Jew and Greek, slave and free, and male and female? Even with hierarchy in various proportions (Eph.5:22; 6:5).

No, not equality, but unity in Christ Jesus is the subject here. “…for you are all one in Christ Jesus”. Whatever differences in background there may be – in Christ Jesus we are connected and one!
