Galatians 2:16 – All boasting is excluded

14-06-2022 - Posted by Hans

… having perceived that a man is not being justified by works of law, except alone through the faith of Christ Jesus, wa also believe in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by the faith of Christ and not by works of law, seeing that by works of law shall no flesh at all be justified.

We have already zoomed in a few times on parts of this verse. This is without a doubt one of the key verses in this letter because it tells the punch line of Paul’s argument in a nutshell. The verse begins with the acknowledgment that a man is not justified by works of law and the verse ends with it. And positively central is the confession of how man is justified, i.e. through the faith of Jesus Christ. To which Paul adds: therefore (=for that reason) we also believe in Christ Jesus.

The essence of our belief is that man cannot add or take away from his justification. That justification is guaranteed by the faith of Christ. As by one act of one man, all men are condemned to become sinners and mortals, so by one act of one man, all men will be justified (Rom. 3:23,24; Rom. 5:18). In that Christ we believe! All boasting is excluded!
