Galatians 1:4 – extricated out of the present wicked eon

… the Lord Jesus Christ, Who gives Himself for our sins, so that He might extricate us out of the present wicked eon, according to the will of our God and Father.

Christ “gave himself” and died “for our sins” (1 Cor. 15:3). Not to, as is traditionally interpreted, ‘bear the penalty for our sins’. No, He died to set us free from sin (“death to sin”; Rom.6:11) and to give new life instead (cf. Gal.2:20).

The “present wicked eon” is called “the eon of this world” in Ephesians 2:2. The present eon is wicked because in it the truth is suppressed (Rom. 1:18), so that the lie reigns. It should therefore come as no surprise that the diabolos is “the god of this eon” (2Cor.4:4).

The work of the Lord Jesus Christ today is to “extricate believers out of the present wicked eon.” Through His Word He informs us and lifts us up. Thus He withdraws us from the evil sphere of thought of the present eon. It is true that we live in the same time as all other people, but with the difference that we are lifted above it. Our orientation, our outlook, our values ​​and firmness, in short our life is above, where Christ is (Col.3:3)!
