Ephesians 6:2,3 – Promising
25-09-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet“Honor your father and mother” (which is the first precept with a promise), that it may becoming well with you and you should be a long time on the earth.
Children should be obedient to their parents (literally: under-hearing). That is all that is asked of children (6:1). Paul supports this with a quotation from the law of Moses: “horror your father and mother”. That is the first precept in the law that is given to children. It is true, this rule is part of the law that was given only to Israel. Yet the moral purity is universal.
Moreover, it is a “precept with a promise”, Paul writes. “that it may becoming well with you…” For Israel that even meant that the observance of the precept would make them live long in the land that GOD would give them (Ex. 20:12). Not only just one simple and equitable thing is asked of children. It is even promising, because it would make the be well! Where children respect their parents, they will function best themselves. That is a win-win situation.
What a privilege for children (and their parents!) when they realize how simple their task is, but also how promising it is!
