Ephesians 5:29,30 – No one hates his own flesh

25-09-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

For no one at any time hates his own flesh, but is nurturing and cherishing it according as Christ also the ecclesia, for we are members of His body.

Nowhere in Scripture is a human called to love himself. The reason for this is that this love is assumed as self-evident. Loving yourself is normal and natural. That is why a person would love his neighbor “as himself” (Gal. 5:14).   One is called to do the first, the second is assumed as self-evident. If a person did not love himself, then the basis of love for his neighbor would also lapse.

It is always the religion that makes suspicious what is natural. Nature is never sinful in Scripture. On the contrary, the unnatural is what is sinful (Rom. 1:26). Scripture knows no sinful nature, in the sense that nature itself would be sinful. The Scriptures also never call to hate one’s own flesh. No one does that, says Paul, and that is the way it should be. Only people who are messed up are pursuing such a thing.

You feed and cherish you own body. That is how it should be. And that is exactly what Christ does today to his own body.
