Ephesians 4:6 – one GOD

21-06-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet

… one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is over all and through all and in all.

No truth is só fundamental as the truth of the one GOD. Indeed is spoken of many gods and many lords (1 Corinthians 8: 5), nevertheless for us there’s only one GOD, in absolute terms. One who places and settles everything. Because that is what ‘god’ in Greek language (Theos) means: placer. When Jesus was asked ‘what is the foremost precept for all’, he answered: ‘Hear Israel, the Lord our GOD is one Lord (Mark 12: 28).

The word for ‘God’ in Hebrew language (Elohim) is plural. Perhaps because He is known in many portions and many modes (compare Hebrews 1: 1). But despite this plural form, it refers to one identity. The verbal form shows that. Elohim speaks, listens, creates, etcetera. All singular.

GOD is a HE – also and again singular. One. Not two or three persons. Like the Scribe reacted on Jesus’ answer (Mark 12: 32): “ In truth, Teacher, Thou sayest ideally that He is One, and there isn’t other more than He.’ This is the cornerstone of all true ‘theology’.
