Ephesians 1:8 – in all wisdom and prudence04-04-2018 - Posted by Andre Piet
…which He lavishes on us; in all wisdom and prudence, making known to us the secret of His will…
Is “in all wisdom and prudence” here about what lavishes on us? Or does it refer to GOD who revealed the secret “in all wisdom and prudence? In both explanations the sentence is a correct one. And both are also true, isn’t it? Just because GOD Himself in all wisdom and prudence reveals the secret of His will, makes us lavish.
Of course, the concepts “wisdom and prudence” go hand in hand. Prudence points to understanding. Knowing how things are put together. But wisdom transcends that almost literally. Wisdom speaks of view and also overview. That also puts together with this context of Ephesians 1. Paul speaks of how GOD, in the fullness of times, will bring together the entire creation under one Head. Wisdom gives view on the great contexts and the coherence of all.
The Greek word for ‘wisdom’ (sophia) is possibly derived from the Hebrew word for ‘watch towers’ (tsophiem). Because God makes His secret(s) known, he acquaints us and so we can overview. Breath-taking perspectives!
