Easter and beer…

On the Ronduit forum, someone poked fun at the typology I cited yesterday in my weblog.

“With Easter I always drink lots of beer. Because yes, beer is yellow, and that’s the third color and blah blah blah, and besides, beer is also very clear, and so is the word of Jesus. Beer is also made from barley, and barley is mentioned a few times in the Bible.”

I responded to that with:

“Well, now that you mention it… Easter comes from Pesach, and during the week of Pesach (‘on the day after the sabbath,’ see Lev. 23:11), the sheaf of the firstfruits of the barley harvest was waved by the priest before the face of the LORD. It was precisely on this day that Christ rose from the grave, as the Firstfruit of all humanity (1 Cor. 15:22 and following).”

The word for barley in Hebrew comes from the same root as prince (sar—compare “sir,” “tsar”). A prince is the “foremost,” or the “first.” The Hebrew word is also directly related to the word for hair (characteristic of barley is its hairy ear), and that again is all about power. The Hebrew word is likewise related to the word for gate, which also has everything to do with power. In ancient times, authority was exercised at the gate (Deut. 21:19).

Then I’m reminded of the hairy Samson, who tore loose the enemy’s gate and carried the door to the top of the mountain… A picture of Him who “could not be held by death,” but who rose as the Firstfruit, and on whose shoulder the government rests, and who is now seated above all rule and authority.

Glorious, clear… cheers!”

Let him who can grasp it, grasp it.
