A Synagogue on the Temple Mount?

Last Monday, Israel’s Army Radio broadcast an interview with the Israeli Minister of National Security, Ben-Gvir. As an outspoken ‘hawk’ in the Israeli cabinet, he has repeatedly expressed his desire to pray on the Temple Mount and has demonstratively done so several times together with other Jews. This has, of course, caused great displeasure in the Arab world, but it is also seen elsewhere as a dangerous provocation. In the mentioned interview, Ben-Gvir stated that he considered it “racist discrimination against Jews” that they are not allowed to pray on the Temple Mount. However, what caused a great stir was his statement that he wants to build a synagogue on the grounds of Al-Aqsa, which Arabs refer to as Haram al-Sharif. No Israeli minister has made such a far-reaching statement since 1948.
Reactions
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared that it regarded Ben-Gvir’s statements as “an explicit and flagrant call to demolish the mosque.” The U.S. State Department also expressed its concern. Any attempt to build a synagogue on the Temple Mount “would show a blatant disregard for the historical status quo regarding the holy sites in Jerusalem,” a spokesperson for the department stated. Ministers in the Israeli cabinet, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, also distanced themselves from Ben-Gvir’s statements.
Premature
Within religious-Zionist circles, Ben-Gvir’s desire for a house of prayer on the Temple Mount is strongly supported. The minister spoke of a synagogue, but there are also detailed plans for the construction of an actual temple. However, the realization of this dream is, at present, premature. The current geopolitical climate does not allow for it at all. Moreover, Ben-Gvir did not advocate for the demolition of Al-Aqsa, as the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs falsely claimed, but rather for a synagogue next to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
As impossible as such a building on that location may seem right now, we know from the prophetic word that it will be built. And indeed, next to the Al-Aqsa complex. Developments are unfolding rapidly, and moreover, the end of this aeon is near. Stay awake!
