1 Timothy 6:14 – Until the advent

10-07-2024 - Posted by Hans

I am charging you in the sight of God, Who is vivifying all and of Jesus Christ, Who testifies in the ideal avowal before Pontius Pilate, that you keep this precept unspotted, irreprehensible, unto the advent of our Lord, Christ Jesus…

Verse 13 is a provision in which Paul appeals first to “the God who gives life to all” and second to “Christ Jesus, who made the ideal avowal before Pontius Pilate.” With this supreme appeal, Paul emphasizes that Timothy should not think lightly of “the precept” that he would keep. A few verses later, Paul repeats this with the words, “O Timothy, that which is committed to you, guard” (6:20). “The precept” refers to the entire word that Timothy would keep “unspotted and irreprehensible.” Timothy was not allowed to take away from “the sound words” that Paul had taught and recorded. Neither the teaching nor the teacher should give rise to any suspicion.

The importance and necessity of keeping “the precept unspotted and irreprehensible” continues “until the advent of our Lord Christ Jesus.” This means that we, as faithful readers today, are also included in Paul’s exhortation. After all, this advent will take place when (soon) our Lord Jesus Christ will be manifested… and we with Him (Col.3:4).
