1 Timothy 2:7– herald, delegate and teacher of the nations

…for which I was appointed a herald and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the nations in knowledge and truth.

Formulated in modern terms, verses 3 to 7 could be called Paul’s mission statement. A short and powerful formulation of the testimony for which he stands and to which he is called. These are the most basic concepts that he expresses: one God, one Mediator, the salvation of all people and the ransom for all. He has been appointed and placed in the position by God for this purpose. Like a herald who must make this testimony known to the world. But also as a delegate (Gr. apostle), because personally called and taught by Christ Jesus (Gal.1:12) to speak on His behalf. Paul’s teaching is the teaching of Christ Jesus himself.

In the Jewish world and in Jerusalem in particular, Paul was regarded as a deceiver who taught “apostacy from Moses” among the nations (Acts 21:21). He therefore never tires of emphasizing that what he has to say is not a lie but the truth. He has been appointed “teacher of the nations” (2Tim.1:11). Paul is God’s spokesperson during the time that Israel is set aside (Rom. 11:11-13). He is the one who teaches us what God has to say today. “In knowledge and truth”!
