1 Timothy 2:6– A ransom not a debt payment

… a Man, Christ Jesus, Who is giving Himself a correspondent Ransom for all (the testimony in its own eras)…

There is no better proof that God wants to save all people than that the one who represents Him gave himself as a ransom for all. To give resurrection life to all mankind, He must first die for them. Because without death there is no resurrection life. When the world crucified Christ Jesus, He paid the price of redemption for them. What a love!

The concept of ‘ransom’ is at odds with the theological idea of ’payment of debt’. In that concept, Jesus had to die to pay the debt to God so that He could forgive us. The only similarity between this idea and that of “ransom” is that both involve payment. But notice the huge difference. If Jesus had paid man’s debt, then God would be the One who demanded payment. Strictly speaking, there is no question of forgiveness since the ‘score’ has been settled. This whole idea is a shocking caricature of the Biblical picture. God did not demand, but His Mediator gave!

Christ Jesus gave himself as a ransom for all. He paid to ’the one’ who held us captive: sin and with it death (Rom.5:12,21). This ransom guarantees the redemption of all!
