As unique as the one God is, so unique is the one mediator of God and mankind. The fact that He is human is of course not unique, but it is that He is the only Mediator of all people. The word for ‘mediator’ is derived (in our language as well as in Greek) from the word ‘middle’: he mediates between two parties. In the above text, on the one hand, He is the one who represents God to people. And on the other hand, He represents people to God.
Christ Jesus is not “the only God” (1:17) but He represents Him. Elsewhere He is called the “image of the invisible God” (Col. 1:15). That He is often identified as God is indeed a figure of speech. He is not the Father, but whoever has seen Him has seen the Father (John 14:9).
Paul’s statements are clear and shine in their simplicity! They stand in stark contrast to the complicated, incomprehensible terms and dogmas that would be coercively imposed in councils a few centuries later.
