1 Timothy 2:1 – All mankind

I am entreating, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, pleadings, thanksgiving be made for all mankind.

The fact that Paul first of all points out to be making “petitions, prayers, pleadings, thanksgivings” indicates how much importance he attached to them. These prayers and thanksgivings are primarily “for the benefit of all mankind.” Yes, “all mankind,” says Paul. Many interpreters weaken this and make all kinds of people out of it, but this reduces the text. Naturally, people often try to justify this explanation by stating that it is impossible for us to pray and thank for all people. But is that so?

It is true that we cannot pray for and thank for each person individually. After all, we only know a tiny part of humanity. But why can’t we dedicate all humanity to our God? Don’t we have every reason to thank Him for wanting to save all people (2:4). And does He not deserve to be honored by us that He is actually the Savior of all people (1Tim.4:10)! Our praying and thanking for all people is supported by the truth of the Gospel that God’s grace has appeared to all people in salvation (Tit.2:11)! God’s love is universal and includes all humanity. That love may first of all be reflected in our prayers!
