1 Timothy 1:17 – The only God

08-11-2023 - Posted by Hans

Now to the King of the eons, the incorruptible, invisible, only, and wise God, be honor and glory for the eons of the eons! Amen!

There is no truth in all of Scripture so elemental as that of the one God. When a scribe asked Jesus what the first commandment of all is, He replied, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one…” (Mark 12:29). Jesus’ answer was taken directly from Deuteronomy 6:4, the so-called ‘Shema’ that is engraved as an essence in the Jewish soul. And its echo resounds generously in the NT. In the high priestly prayer, Jesus addressed his Father as “the only true God” (John 17:3). And Paul also emphatically declares against paganism: “For us there is only one God, the Father…” (1Cor.8:6).

From this perspective, it is unimaginable how, after just a few centuries, Christendom has exchanged this truth for unbiblical and incomprehensible formulas such as that of the ’trinity’. This doctrine even acquired the status of the most important dogma at Nicaea. The whole idea is (rightly!) disguised polytheism for an Orthodox Jew. Paul also teaches a pure monotheism and here emphatically declares that the incorruptible and invisible God is the only God (Gr. monoo theoo). To Him be honor and glory… AMEN!
