1 Timothy 1:11 – The happy God (2)

… in accord with the evangel of the glory of the happy God, with which I was entrusted.

The Dutch word for “happy” is “gelukkige”. It aptly indicates the meaning of the word. It is related to ‘lukken’ which means ‘succeed’: a prosperous outcome and success. Of the happy man in Psalm 1, who prophetically refers to the Messiah, it is said: “All that he does shall prosper” (Ps. 1:3). And in Isaiah 53, which also speaks prophetically of the Messiah, it is said: “The desire of YAHWEH it shall prosper in His hand.”

God is “the happy God” for the simple reason that everything He undertakes succeeds! And why does everything work out for Him? Because He is GOD! He designed everything and created everything and nothing is beyond His control. He forms the light but He also creates the darkness. He makes peace, but He is also the Creator of evil. This God Himself solemnly declares, through Isaiah (45:7): “I, YAHWEH, make all these things!” The existence of sin, suffering, death and evil is certainly not an ‘accident’. For YAHWEH has made everything for its own outcome (Prov.16:4)!

God is GOD: The One who gives everything a place. He wants to save all people (1Tim.2:4) and that is why He is the Savior of all people. He succeeds in everything!
