1 Corinthians 9:20 – not ‘under law’, and yet…

22-06-2019 - Posted by Andre Piet

…And I became to the Jews as a Jew, that I should be gaining Jews; to those under law as under law (not being myself under law), that I should be gaining those under law…

Paul didn’t only want to preach the Evangel, but also to demonstrate it. Therefore he didn’t ask a fee or wage. He waived financial gain, just to gain people for the Evangel entrusted to him. All in his life was subordinated to that.

If he was a Jew among Jews, he behaved Jewish. Not difficult for someone with his background. Was he among them who were ‘under law’, he behaved ‘under law’. We see that, for example, when he is in Jerusalem (Acts 21) and conformed to their rituals, the heydays, the temple service etcetera. Paul himself was not ‘under law’ and taught also that the people of Israel since Christ’ resurrection was not ‘under law’ anymore (Galatians 3:23). But how could he explain that, if he not first would disclose the Evangel for them. First he had to gain them for the risen Christ. Therefore thát was his target.
