1 Corinthians 15:37 – Sowing and burying

27-02-2020 - Posted by Andre Piet

And, what you are sowing, you are not sowing the body which shall come to be, but a naked kernel, perchance of wheat or some of the rest.

The image of sowing in the earth is telling when it comes to dying and death. It speaks of the fate of the perishable human who returns to the earth. “You are dust, and you will return to dust.” A funeral aptly illustrates the idea of sowing. A farmer entrusts a grain of seed, “perchance of wheat” or something else to the earth. He does this in the expectation that the “naked kernel” will undergo a complete transformation. He has no influence on that, he can go to sleep peacefully. In the same confidence we can bury our dead. GOD will give a body to it in due course.

We are used to it, but is it not a miracle of God that a “naked kernel” produces a totally new body? You put a grain or seed in the soil and what comes out of it? An ear of corn. Or an apple tree. Or a vine, you name it! That which is put into the earth does not resemble what comes out over time. That is the great miracle that the Creator accomplishes!
