1 Corinthians 10:6 – Types of us
13-07-2019 - Posted by Andre PietNow these things became types of us, for us not to be lusters after evil things, according as they also lust.
The things that Paul recalls here from Israel’s history would teach us. What happened to Israel is not just history, it is typological. Images that all point to what lies beneath the surface of the text. Such a teaching may therefore be uncovering.
That the majority of the blessed people nevertheless perished in the desert has everything to do with what Paul wanted to make clear from chapter 9 onwards. He himself did not want to be disqualified (9:27) after preaching the Evangel to others. Believing is not a matter of trusting God once (grace) and then subsequently depending on yourself. Then you start in faith but you end in disbelief. Then you start in grace but you end in law and self-righteousness.
That was also the case with Israel. No person died in the desert for the first fifty days. Everything changed from Sinai where they declared: All what YAHWEH says, we shall do (Ex.19:8). And from then on they were knocked down for the vast majority. It is fatal I f man does not only look at GOD’s grace alone!
