1 Corinthians 10:14 – get out of here!

Wherefore my beloved, flee from idolatry.

It is not such a fortunate choice to start a new section with this verse, as is the case in many Bible translations. Because this verse is the conclusion of the foregoing. GOD is faithful and with the trial, He always provides the outcome. On that basis and with that in mind, you cannot distance yourself from the idolatry quickly enough. Simply because you have got no business here.

But why flee? That verb suggests a danger that one could easily succumb to. What is dangerous about it? Knowing that something is idolatry is one thing. But distancing yourself from it in an environment where everything is dominated by religion is something else. It means social isolation and rejection. Where everyone around you, family, friends and acquaintances is involved in religion, you must have the courage not to participate.

Do not think that Paul’s call would be obsolete today. The danger is even more subtle! Because the idolatry in our part of the world has been ‘christianized’, but still is idolatry and religion. Based on fear of hell in the service of three gods…Get out of there!
