1 Corinthians 10:12 – Remain standing

19-07-2019 - Posted by Andre Piet

So that, let him who is supposing he stand beware that he should not be falling.

With this verse we have arrived at the conclusion. What Paul wants to make clear to the Corinthians is that the fact that one once stood in grace does not mean that you are standing in grace right now. The history of Israel had to make that clear. From the moment that the people at Sinai made their vow to God, they were dropping like flies in the desert. In fact, the whole people perished in the desert with the exception of Joshua and Caleb. One started in grace (for free) but that foundation was abandoned and exchanged for merits (works).

Paul always emphasizes in his letters the importance of remaining standing. To the Galatians, Paul (5:4) writes that whoever expects justice from the law, has fallen from grace. He writes that to Galatians who once believed in the Evangel that he told them. They started in faith, but ended in works (Gal 3:2). That is a fatal switch. We would look at Christ Jesus and Him alone. Only the can we stand up to all opposition and temptation. That is the rock on which we stand, the rest is quicksand.
