1 Timothy 6:12 – Get hold of eonian life

“Eonian life” is what most translations call “eternal life.” The disadvantage of that representation is that most people link the concept ‘eternal’ to ‘eternity’ instead of to eon . Eons in Scripture are world ages with both a beginning and an end. “The eonian life” is the life of the future eon(s) in which Christ will reign (Luke 18:30). At the completion of the eons all people will have been made alive (1Cor.15:22-28), but eonian life is certainly not for everyone. “Everyone in his own order.”

Unlike the peoples living on earth who will enter the Millennium, for us as believers today, “eonian life” is synonymous with resurrection life. After all, all who are called in this age and belong to “the ecclesia, the body of Christ”, will have received a glorified and immortal body and reached their final destiny at the beginning of the age to come.

Paul calls Timothy to get hold on “the eonian life” to which he was called. That life is indeed future, but we can already anticipate it, seize its pleasure and reap its wonderful fruits! That is walking “in newness of life”!
