Romans 2:20 – pretension or trust in God 

Besides, you have confidence in yourself to be a guide of the blind, a light of those in darkness, a discipliner of the imprudent, a teacher of minors, having the form of knowledge and the truth in the law.

Where the Jew takes the position to be a guide, a light, an educator and a teacher, expectations are high. Certainly when all others are also regarded as blind, groping about in darkness, unwise and minors. In itself, there is nothing wrong with this Jewish self-awareness. After all, Israel has been chosen to show the way, to be a light to the nations. And to educate and teach the unwise and the minor. But the big question is: is this sense of one’s own identity and calling based on works or on faith? When it is based on “work” then that is a task that the Jew himself must fulfill and a pretense that he himself must fulfill. A mission impossible, doomed to fail. On the other hand, if it is based on faith, it is not a command at all. Because if GOD promises it then He must do it! But then He also receives all the credit for that!
